Nick Runge is a Los Angeles-based visual artist. Born into a creative family of professional artists in Colorado, he gained an early interest in drawing and visual imagination. After years of honing his abilities, he began pursuing art as a career and in 2004 began working as an illustrator in the comic book industry eventually drafting for the likes of IDW, Dark Horse, and many others. During this period of commercial and professional development, he began seriously focusing on personal paintings drawing from the world of film art and traditional through various official and private commissions.
He eventually abandoned commercial illustration and currently focuses exclusively on fine art. He works predominately in oils and watercolor often selecting portraiture or figurative subject matter to achieve what he describes as “abstracted realism”, which he defines as a combination of simplified rendering or brushwork with realistic composition. This style simultaneously provides an illusion of realism while breaking shapes and form in an abstracted manner. He has exhibited widely both internationally and domestically and regularly conducts workshops both in Los Angeles and abroad.
